Determine if your property was damaged during the storm.
If so, it’s important to prevent further damage from happening to your property. For example, if there are portions of your roof that are damaged, you can have tarps cover the damage. If your house floods, you should have demo and remediation done to tear out and dry wet areas so damage doesn’t spread or worsen.
If you have insurance on your property, you should read the policy conditions to determine your obligations, such as notifications, and documentation, in filing an insurance claim for financial assistance from your insurance carrier. Some policies, including flood, have important submission deadlines for forms and paperwork.
Everyone has a different insurance policy so there is no universal answer for what damage will be covered by YOUR insurance. As a general guide, you should read your insurance policy to determine:
- The limits of your coverage and any sub-limits for specific items. For example, debris removal or wind-driven rain/precipitation.
- Your deductibles. Most FL policies will contain a higher % deductible for wind losses from Hurricanes. For example, a hurricane deductible may be 5% of the total insured value of your property or a flood deductible may be a $10,000 value. You’ll have a deductible under each policy
- Any applicable exclusions that may apply to your damage. For example, most property policies do not cover water damage caused by floods. That coverage or policy is purchased separately.
Skyline Adjusters can conduct a courtesy insurance policy review to assist you, the policyholder, to understand the limits of your policy and other provisions that surround your insurance coverage. Further, we can offer assistance in developing a claim plan, including documenting damages and presenting it to your insurance company.
Should you feel that you need more assistance, such as help in estimating the damage, preparing the proof of loss, and managing the entire insurance claim process, Skyline Adjusters does offer these services for a 10% fee of insurance proceeds received by the policyholder. Please see the example contract on this page.
